CC MINS 20210804 SPC (Sakura Ceremony) MINUTES RANCHO PALOS VERDES CITY COUNCIL SPECIAL MEETING- SAKURA CITY CEREMONY AUGUST 4, 2021 CALL TO ORDER: A Special meeting of the Rancho Palos Verdes City Council for the purpose of a Sister Cities First Year Anniversary Ceremony was called to order by Mayor Alegria at 5:01 P.M. at City Hall — Parking Lot Area, 30940 Hawthorne Boulevard, and via teleconference/virtual meeting using the Zoom platform notice having been given with affidavit thereto on file. City Council roll call was answered as follows: PRESENT: Bradley, Cruikshank, Dyda and Mayor Alegria ABSENT: Ferraro* (excused) Also present were Ara Mihranian, City Manager; Karina Banales, Deputy City Manager; Cory Linder Director of Recreation and Parks; Lukasz Buchwald, Information Technology Manager; and Teresa Takaoka, City Clerk. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mayor Alegria. APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA: Councilmember Dyda moved, seconded by Councilmember Cruikshank, to approve the agenda as presented. The motion passed on the following roll call vote: AYES: Bradley, Cruikshank, Dyda, and Mayor Alegria NOES: Ferraro PUBLIC COMMENTS: None. REGULAR BUSINESS: 1. Sister Cities First Year Anniversary Ceremony (Bañales) 111 Mayor Alegria, Councilmember Dyda and Councilmember Cruikshank each presented opening remarks in honor of this momentous occasion as Rancho Palos Verdes and Sakura City celebrated their first year as sister Cities. This milestone was marked by a fun and innovative in-person/virtual ceremony held concurrently in both cities with guest speakers, live performances, cultural exchange videos, the unveiling of a sister city directional sign at RPV City Hall, and the presentation of a Japanese commemorative stamp collection. Performances included musician Yuki Yasuda, who played a magnificent song on a koto, a traditional Japanese 13-string instrument, and dances to traditional Japanese songs by students in RPV's Sora Class led by instructor Sachiko Matsumoto. Video presentations included compilations by students from Miraleste Intermediate School, Ujiie Junior High School, and Sakura City's Hamegg volunteer group. Mayor Pro Tem Bradley and City Manager Mihranian presented closing remarks and thanked those in attendance as well as participants via zoom for a wonderful celebration.
