A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CALIFORNIA, RENAMING
ABALONE COVE SHORELINE PARK TO ABALONE COVE
PARK
WHEREAS, in 1987 the City of Rancho Palos Verdes Redevelopment Agency
acquired the Abalone Cove property from the County of Los Angeles, which includes
approximately 1-acre Abalone Cove Shoreline Park, 65.2-acre Abalone Cove Reserve,
and 12.76 acres of beach area; and,
WHEREAS, the shoreline portion of the property extending into the ocean is
designated by the State as the Abalone Cove Ecological Reserve, and the property
borders a state-designated Marine Protected Area; and,
WHEREAS, the 65.2-acre Abalone Cove Reserve is one of twelve subareas
comprising the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve for the purpose of preserving sensitive
species and their habitat; and,
WHEREAS, Abalone Cove Shoreline Park is improved with a parking lot, staff
office, public restrooms, native garden, trails, picnic areas, shade structure,
interpretive areas, and public amenities; and,
WHEREAS, Abalone Cove Shoreline Park is the primary parking and staging
area for the public to visit Abalone Cove Shoreline Park, adjacent Abalone Cove
Reserve, and the Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove beaches; and,
WHEREAS, the word "shoreline" in the park's name has created public
confusion with the City's Shoreline Park, located at the City's easterly boundary; and,
WHEREAS, on April 2, 2019, the City Council chose to rename Shoreline Park
and remove the word "shoreline" from Abalone Cove Shoreline Park, partly to 'avoid
public confusion and simplify park names.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RANCHO
PALOS VERDES DOES HEREBY FIND, DETERMINE, AND RESOLVE AS
FOLLOWS:
Section 1: The word "shoreline" will be removed from "Abalone Cove
Shoreline Park," as more particularly shown in Exhibit "A", attached hereto and
incorporated herein by reference, and the facility's new name will be "Abalone Cove
Park."
