PVDE Study_Jan2010_App F Willdan Engineering Palos Verdes Drive East Preliminary Study Report #100114/2000/10006 City of Rancho Palos Verdes AAPPPPEENNDDIIXX FF Shared Lane Marking for Bicycles (Sharrows) F - 1 F - 2 BICYCLE SHARED LANE MARKING (SHARROW) The Shared Lane Marking for bicycles, commonly call a “sharrow,” was recently approved by the federal government. It is illustrated on Exhibit F-1. It may be used to: A. Assist bicyclists with lateral positioning in a shared lane with on-street parallel parking in order to reduce the chance of a bicyclist’s impacting the open door of a parked vehicle B. Assist bicyclists with lateral positioning in lanes that are too narrow for a motor vehicle and a bicycle to travel side by side within the same traffic lane C. Alert road users of the lateral location bicyclists are likely to occupy within the traveled way D. Encourage safe passing of bicyclists by motorists E. Reduce the incidence of wrong-way bicycling The Shared Lane Marking should not be placed on roadways that have a speed limit above 35 mph nor shall it be used on shoulders or designated bicycle lanes.
