CITY'S 40 TH ANNIVERSARY PLANS
RECOMMENDATION
1.Receive and file and provide any additional directives to Staff.
BACKGROUND and DISCUSSION
September of 2013 marks our City's 40th Anniversary of Incorporation.Looking back at the
planning and preparations that went into the last big anniversary celebration five years ago,
your staff realizes that we must begin to plan the events and commemorative recognitions
that would take place over the course of months, culminating on September i h .A
community-wide festival or gala event such as the City has sponsored in the past will
require reserving the date and facilities as soon as possible to avoid conflicts with other
major special events and to allow adequate time for organizing, budgeting, coordinating
with volunteers,and so on.
As we are now in the earliest stages of forming ideas,we realize the value of the many
non-profit groups we have on the Peninsula-and one in particular that our city shares a
strong and successful partnership with is the PVP Land Conservancy. We recently learned
that the PVPLC will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary in the same year as our own 40th
Anniversary. With that in mind,it would seem most beneficial and meaningful for both
entities to consider one or more jointly sponsored celebrations next year as a way to
maximize our outreach to our residents,as well as to proudly share our rich history of
accomplishments and to recognize the leaders who contributed so much to our quality of
life over the years.Public education that furthers the public's appreciation and support for
the amenities we enjoy such as our trails and preserves would be an important goal.
The Land Conservancy held its regular board meeting on October 24,2012,and as a
result of initial discussions with City staff, introduced the topic of its own upcoming
milestone anniversary celebration, including the possibility of joining with the City of RPV
to sponsor programs and community celebrations as may be desired.Staff had given
Council Members a preliminary advisory of this concept prior to the PVPLC's Board

meeting, and did not hear any concerns or objections raised at that time. The purpose of
this agenda item is to update the Council of the ideas being discussed,in the hope you
agree that we should explore such opportunities in the coming year.
When the Land Conservancy Board met,it confirmed its support for the concept of joint
sponsorship of events and programs designed to raise community awareness of its local
conservation efforts, and to highlight its successful partnership with our City. The Board
discussed a desire to work collaboratively with the City,as well as other sponsors,
volunteers and non-profit groups to reach a broad audience in providing educational
opportunities that are enjoyable and educational.Three members of the Board stepped
forward to organize the commemorative activities on behalf of the Land Conservancy:
Henry Jurgens,Susan McKenna and Grace Wallace.
Citx staff will also be seeking the Council's concurrence on how it wishes to celebrate its
40t Anniversary.Staff has tentatively identified the major celebration to take place on
Saturday,May 4,2013.With the generous assistance of a community volunteer,we are in
the preliminary stages of planning daytime outdoor activities atpne or more City park sites,
as well as an evening event-potentially at Terranea Resort--on that date.Again,it is
important to note that nothing is carved in stone, and your thoughts and feedback would be
most valuable.
