RANCHO PALOS VERDES CITY COUNCIL WORKSHOP FACILITATION
JANUARY 3,2012
WORKSHOP OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES
This facilitation will focus on understanding and developing the Rancho Palos Verdes City
Council vision and expectations subsequent to the election of new Council members in
November 2011.The following objectives were designed to support specific workshop agenda
items, and engage Council around organizational dynamics, communication with staff, and
opportunity to share its goals and projects for the future:
1.Understand the vision and long-term goals and projects of RPV Council Members;
2.Provide direction and a communication process around which the projects/goals will be
achieved;
3.Enable each Council Member to create a "Legacy Statement;"
4.Determine how projects (in the pipeline)will be handled from a forward-thinking
perspective.
There are four distinct activities scheduled to be included in the workshop agenda, which
include:
1.Brainstorming of future projects, proposed policy changes,or anticipated goals by each
Council member. This approach allows each member to generate a list of these items
over a 20-30 minute period of time. The outcome is a list of what they believe will
enhance the lives of RPV residents, provide opportunities to improve the City's
infrastructure, and advance beliefs around public safety and other key policy
considerations for the City.
2.The identification of Long-Term (LT)and Short-Term (ST) goals,based on the items
generated, comprises the second activity for the evening.Council members will be
asked to designate the time period of the project, for instance,ST=Less than 90 days or
LT=Longer than 90 days. This process begins to clarify what might be perceived as
strategic imperatives around which more data might be collected from the community
through surveys, town hall meetings, and focus groups. This process also begins to
inform the Council about potential competing issues as they relate to existing projects.
3.Moreover,the workshop will afford the City Council an overall view of projects currently
in the "pipeline"and, subsequently, move toward an understanding of how these projects
will be supported in conjunction with any newly proposed projects by Council. The intent
here is to begin this dialogue in order to create awareness of the existing projects, along
with an estimate of time and cost invested in the projects to date.
4.In addition, each Council Member will create what has been termed a "Legacy
Statement"that will enable him/her to engage in forward thinking about his/her tenure
and the significant contributions and accomplishments to be achieved during that time
period. This final agenda activity will give the Council an opportunity to reflect on the
original list generated and ask questions regarding priorities of projects and goals.
This workshop should be seen as the beginning of what may become periodic sessions for
Council to foster increasingly higher levels of collaboration.
