ROBINSON, HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGE OCTOBER 7, 2014 CITY MANAGER RECRUITMENT -UPDATE CAROLYNN PETRU, ACTING CITY MANAGE~ RECOMMENDATION 1) Receive and file an update on the progress of the recruitment for the City Manager position; and, 2) Select a date for first interviews of the final candidates for the position. DISCUSSION On Friday, September 12th the City's recruitment period for the City Manager position closed. Mr. Bob Murray has reviewed the applications and resumes received from candidates across the nation. The purpose of this report is to update the City Council with regard to the steps already taken in the process, and what work remains to be completed. On February 2, 2014, the City Council created the City Manager Recruitment Firm Selection Ad Hoc Subcommittee (Councilmembers Brooks and Campbell). Through the efforts of the Subcommittee and interviews conducted by the full City Council, Bob Murray & Associates was selected on April 15th to represent the City's interests in the recruitment process. At its meeting on June 3rd the City Council approved Staff's proposed public outreach plan, consisting of two Town Hall meetings, community outreach using an online survey, and media announcements. The outreach effort was completed on July 11, 2014. After considerable discussion, the recruitment bulletin was refined and approved by the City Council, and the recruitment was formally launched on August 6, 2014. At the time of the recruitment's closing, September 12, 2014, Mr. Murray had received a total of 49 applications. Mr. Murray used the input gathered from the one-on-one interviews with each City Councilmember, the Town Hall meetings and the results from the online survey as he reviewed the qualifications and characteristics of each candidate. Mr. Murray has identified the top tier candidates from the applicant pool and conducted preliminary interviews. Mr. Murray anticipates providing between five and seven (5-7) exceptional candidates for the City Council to review and ultimately interview. 3-1 City Manager Recruitment -Update October 7, 2014 Page 2 of 2 Mr. Murray proposed Saturday, October 18, 2014 as a date for the City Council to conduct the first round of interviews with the candidates. As of October 2, 2014, two Councilmembers were unavailable for that date. Therefore, during this Regular Business item, Mr. Murray is requesting the City Council to bring their calendars to select a date and time to conduct the first round of interviews. During this evening's Closed Session, Mr. Murray will request direction from the City Council regarding the slate of candidates to be interviewed. 3-2
