PLACEMENT OF SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS AT CITY
ENTRANCES
RECOMMENDATION
Consider placing this item on a future City Council agenda.
DISCUSSION
Due to the growing increase of crime in our community and corresponding public safety
concerns from a large segment of our RPV community, I raised this as a 'Future
Agenda Item' at a recent City Council meeting and requested the City Attorney to
assess whether it is legal for us to install surveillance cameras at key city entrances for
use by the Sheriff's Department for crime detection purposes. The City Attorney opined
that it was, indeed legal and is in use throughout the Nation and in cities in California.
I am requesting the Council take up this matter by assessing the cost of installing and
maintaining video cameras with no sound recording for crime prevention purposes only.
We can go a long way by helping to find criminals on their way out of the community,
once a vehicle has been identified. We might consider also posting signs stating that
the community is 'under surveillance,' thereby giving warning to would-be criminals.
Tackling crime deterrence with a multi-pronged approach which includes Neighborhood
Watch, Homeowner's Associations, neighbor-to-neighbor communications and the use
of surveillance equipment on public property can greatly benefit our City and our
Peninsula, as a whole.
