The meeting was called to order at 9:10 a.m. by Vice Chairman
Byrd at the Rancho Palos Verdes Environmental Services Department
offices at 30940 Hawthorne Boulevard.
PRESENT: Commissioners Clark, Hayes and Lorenzen, Vice Chairman
Byrd and Chairman Katherman (for overview only).
ABSENT: Commissioners Alberio and Mowlds (Excused)
Also present were Director of Environmental Services Dudley
Onderdonk, Charles Abbott, and Dr. Perry Ehlig from staff, and
Lois Larue, and J. J. McLaren.
This meeting started with a brief overview of landslide problems
in Rancho Palos Verdes by Mr. Abbott and Dr. Ehlig. Due to the
underlying geology, the entire Palos Verdes Peninsula is
susceptible to landslides. The most noticeable and documented
are the Portuguese Bend, Abalone Cove, Klondike Canyon and Flying
Triangle slides. Most of these are stable now, with the
exception of the Portuguese Bend slide which is moving as much as
0.1 inch every two days. Dr. Ehlig prepared a handout which
discussed the landslides in more detail.
Chairman Katherman left after the overview as he had taken the
tour of the landslide areas before.
Mr. Abbott conducted a tour of the Portuguese Bend landslide. He
outlined the measures used to stop the landslide, including
dewatering of wells, improving surface drainage, removing earth
at several locations, and buttressing the base of the slide. The
tour included a look at the slide from the top at Peacock Flats
to the bottom in the Portuguese Bend Club. Several pumping
stations and drainage facilities were examined.
The meeting adjourned at 12:10 p.m.
