PC RES 2010-024 P .C. RESOLUTION NO. 2010-24
A RESOLUTION OF THE PLANNING COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF RANCHO PALOS VERDES TAKING A
POSITION IN OPPOSITION TO THE MARYMOUNT INITIATIVE
CERTIFIED FOR THE NOVEMBER 2, 2010 BALLOT
WHEREAS, the Planning Commission recognizes the right of the voters to use
the initiative process to force a public vote as a form of direct democracy;
NOW, THEREFORE, THE PLANNING COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF RANCHO
PALOS VERDES, CALIFORNIA, DOES FIND, RESOLVE AND DECLARE AS
FOLLOWS:
Section 1: The health, safety and welfare of the public is poorly served by the use of
the initiative process for the establishment of complex, site specific land uses such as
the development plan proposed by Marymount College in its current initiative to the
voters. The City's existing process for establishing and managing land use which
includes written applications, noticed hearings, public testimony, conditional use
permits, Environmental Impact Reports and mitigation plans, is a more appropriate,
consistent and thorough method for balancing the property rights of property owners
with the health, safety and welfare of the community.
Section 2: Based on the foregoing, the Planning Commission of the City of Rancho
Palos Verdes encourages all Rancho Palos Verdes registered voters to vote against the
Marymount Initiative in the November 2, 2010 Special Election.
