CC RES 1977-075 RESOLUTION NO. 77-75
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF RANCHO PALOS VERDES ENDORSING THE ACTION OF
THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS IN
PROTESTING THE UNJUST AND UNFAIR AUTOMOBILE
INSURANCE PREMIUMS BEING IMPOSED ON LOCAL
RESIDENTS
WHEREAS, the automobile insurance industry establishes rates
and premiums based on the location of a person's residence and not on that
person's driving record; and
WHEREAS, comparisons show that residents of Los Angeles
County generally and of the City of Rancho Palos Verdes in particular pay
higher automobile insurance premiums than people living elsewhere in
California; and
WHEREAS, automobile insurance companies allege that the high
cost of repairing damaged vehicles in Los Angeles County causes the insurance
companies to charge a higher rate to drivers of Los Angeles County; and
WHEREAS, investigations have shown that automobile repair costs
are comparatively lower in Los Angeles County than elsewhere in California; and
WHEREAS, investigations have shown that the rate of incidents
of injury accidents in Los Angeles County generally and in the City of
Rancho Palos Verdes in particular is considerably lower than that in other
areas in California; and
WHEREAS, such investigations demonstrate that the automobile
insurance companies are charging unjust and unfair premiums to drivers re-
siding in Los Angeles County generally and in the City of Rancho Palos Verdes
in particular;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the
City of Rancho Palos Verdes, as follows:
Section 1. That the City Council of the City of Rancho Palos
Verdes does hereby endorse and support the action of the Board of Supervisors
of the County of Los Angeles in their efforts in protesting the unfair and
unjust automobile insurance rates being imposed upon local residents.
Section 2. The South Bay Cities Association is hereby urged
to support the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles in its
efforts to protect local residents from being charged said unjust and unfair
automobile insurance rates.
Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to send copies
of this resolution to State Senator Robert Beverly, Assemblywoman Marilyn Ryan,
the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles and the South Bay
Cities Association.
