CC RES 1979-011 RESOLUTION 79-11
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
RANCHO PALOS VERDES REQUESTING THE PUBLIC UTILITIES
COMMISSION TO RE-EVALUATE HIGH PRESSURE SODIUM STREET
LIGHTING RATES
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the City Council of the City of Rancho Palos
Verdes to foster and promote the conservation of energy within the City of
Rancho Palos Verdes; and
WHEREAS, the City, as part of its conservation program, intends to pro-
vide for the conversion of incandescent and mercury vapor street lights to
the more energy efficient sodium vapor street lights as rapidly as possible;
and
WHEREAS, the magnitude of the savings in the Los Angeles County area by
this conversion is illustrated by the fact that Los Angeles County, alone,
administers approximately 65,000 low intensity lights of 11,000 lumens or less,
mainly on local streets; and
WHEREAS, Edison rates for high pressure sodium lighting as approved by the
Public Utilities Commission appear to be disproportionately high when compared
to mercury vapor lighting, especially in the low intensity categories, the pre-
sent Edison base cost for a 7,000 lumens mercury vapor light being $5.72 per
month for all night service versus $7.00 for the same service for the smaller
5,800 lumens high pressure sodium light;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of
Rancho Palos Verdes requests the Public Utilities Commission to re-evaluate high
pressure sodium street lighting rates and establish such rates at the lowest
amount possible to encourage and enable the use of sodium lights to conserve
energy; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Clerk be instructed to notify the
Public Utilities Commission and the Southern California Edison Company of this
action.
PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED this 6 day of February, 1979.
