COMMUNITY LEADERS' BREAKFAST
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1993
The meeting was called to order at 8 :00 A.M. by Mayor Susan Brooks
at the Hesse Park Community Center, 29301 Hawthorne Boulevard,
notice having been given with affidavit thereto on file.
PRESENT: BACHARACH, KUYKENDALL, McTAGGART, RYAN & MAYOR
BROOKS
Self introductions followed the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag
which was led by Mayor Pro Tem Kuykendall.
After opening remarks by Mayor Brooks the following topics were
discussed:
20th Anniversary Celebration
As Co- Chairwoman of the 20th Anniversary Committee, Recreation &
Parks Chairwoman Marilyn Lyon gave a brief overview of the material
prepared to promote celebration of the City's 20th anniversary. All
of the promotional material for this event was imprinted with the
original Spanish land grant swinging heart branding iron design.
Ms. Lyon directed attention to the list of activities planned to
celebrate this anniversary and encouraged participation in them.
Congressional & State Representatives
Congresswoman Jane Harman reported on her efforts to prevent the
closure of the El Segundo Air Force Base and stressed its economic
importance to the South Bay area.
Assemblywoman Betty Karnette also reported on her work to help the
economy of the area.
Public Safety Update
Captain William Mangan, Commander of the Lomita Sheriff 1-s Station,
made some general remarks concerning police activity in the City.
He reported that about thirty percent of the crime in the City
could be eliminated if people closed their garage doors and made
sure that windows and doors were locked when they left home.
Capital Improvement Program Update
Councilman Ryan gave a short overview of the condition of the
City's roads and the cost associated with repairing and, in some
cases, rebuilding them.
State Financial Crises
Mayor Brooks summarized the State's budget shortfall and how that
will result in additional revenue reduction to the City.
Public Safety
In response to an .inquiry about police protection for the Peninsula
in case of another riot in the Los Angeles area, Capt. Mangan
summarized the plans that have been made on a regional -wide basis
for the use of the National Guard and other police agencies in the
event of another riot.
Apropos emergency preparedness matters, Mayor Pro Tem Kuykendall
reported on the mutual aid mechanisms that are in place and the
improvements that have been made on a state -wide basis since the
Los Angeles riots.
Kevin Peterson with General Telephone Company invited the Council
to attend the South Bay Economic Development Council scheduled to
be held on February 26th in Torrance.
Ken Dyda , Chairman of the Long Range Finance Committee, stated that
the committee's report would be presented to the Council in early
March.
Gail Lorenzen, Neighborhood Watch Coordinator, explained the
telephone "tree" that has been instituted by the Neighborhood Watch
Program and how it can mobilize the east side of the Peninsula.
Citizen of the Month Program Mayor Brooks explained how this
program honors those citizens who contribute to the community. She
encouraged those present to submit the names of candidates eligible
for this recognition.
At 10:00 A.M. the meeting adjourned on motion of Councilman
McTaggart. ��
