COMMUNITY LEADERS' BREAKFAST
APRIL 25, 1998
The meeting was called to order at 9:10 A.M. by Mayor Barbara Ferraro at Marymount
College, 30800 Palos Verdes Drive East, notice having been given with affidavit thereto
on file.
PRESENT: McTaggart, Hollingsworth, Lyon, & Mayor Ferraro
ABSENT: Byrd
Also present were City Manager Paul Bussey, Finance Director Dennis McLean,
Assistant City Manager Carolynn Petru, Public Works Director Les Evans, Interim
Director of Planning, Building & Code Enforcement Joel Rojas, Senior Administrative
Analyst Gina Park, and Administrative Services Director /City Clerk Jo Purcell,
Dr. Tom McFadden, President of Marymount College, welcomed everybody to the
college.
After opening remarks by Mayor Ferraro, self introductions followed by all attendees.
Peninsula Emergency Response Team
Mayor Ferraro congratulated the most recent graduates of the PERT program and
presented them with a memento in recognition of their commitment to this emergency
preparation program.
Natural Community Conservation Plan (NCCP)
Interim Director Rojas gave a broad overview of this conservation program which is
intended to preserve coastal sage scrub and rare species while allowing development
to take place without endangerment to these elements. In particular, he described the
two draft preserve alternatives which the City's consultant has devised to preserve over
1,000 acres of coastal sage scrub habitat, a plant community composed of such plants
as lemonberry, sage, and buckwheat which supports threatened and endangered
species such as the Palos Verdes Blue Butterfly, and California Gnatcatcher. He
further outlined the community outreach program that had been developed to build an
awareness in the community of the proposed NCCP Program. He predicted that the
Plan would be completed and ready for submission to the State and Federal resource
agencies for approval sometime in late 1998 or early 1999.
Community Recycling Efforts
Representing Waste Management of Los Angeles was Michelle Revell who reviewed
the State law requiring that 50% of refuse be recycled by the year 2000. Ms. Revelle
described the educational programs that the refuse industry is promoting in the schools
and the material that is available to encourage the practice of recycling in the general
population.
After completion of the presentations, the meeting adjourned at 10:29 A.M.
