This initial study suggests 3 possible approaches to dealing with the
landslide area and its impact on the offshore environment.
1. One consideration is a revetment surfacing of the slope leading down
to the water's edge. This would be intended to provide a more durable
replacement for the gabions that have been used in the past to reduce
bank erosion along the shoreline. A revetment, however, would have no
effect on reducing the land movement.
2. A second consideration is a dike or sea wall at the water' dge
reduce the erosion and other damage from waves and tide Like a
revetment, a dike or sea wall would not impede the movement of the
slide.
3. A third consideration is a breakwater to protect the shoreline from
the batterjng effects of the waves. A breakwater, properly located and
constructed, could also divert the ocean currents away from the
shoreline. The ocean currents that move close to the shore carry away
the dirt as it moves into the water. This action prevents'the slide from
building its own buttress to slow and eventually stop the land movement.
The slide area consists of a very large piece of land well lubricated by
subterranean water that exerts a tremendous force with its downhill
movement. Any attempt to impede the land movement with a structure
of any kind would require an enormous underpinning. I'm not sure that
the surcharge could even be calculated accurately due to the constant
changing of the moisture content of the soil. It would seem that the
answer is to exhaust this energy by allowing the slide to build its own
buttress to provide the back pressure needed to neutralize the downward
pressure. This could be accomplished with a breakwater that would
divert the ocean currents away from the shoreline.
There is, however, another way to go that would accomplish this same
end at considerably less cost and probably in a shorter period of time.
By raising the ocean floor adjacent to the slide area a foot or so above
high tide with broken concrete from the shoreline out as far as needed,
the slide could build its own buttress over the raised area without being
washed away. The concrete would come from various demolition
