If our emphasis becomes turning our civic area into a large scale recreational facility/playground we open the city up to risk, expense, and liability for ongoing pool, skateboard, tennis, basketball, and playing field maintenance/upkeep. Picnic tables, pavilions, public spaces and plazas (all for innovative programming) will provide a gathering place and anchor for our community. Shade structures and trees are more passive and in keeping with the RPV mission focus of low density, semi-rural, natural use of space. I'm sure you're aware of the increasing population and traffic density in RPV, not to mention the unexpected draw that social media has had attracting throngs of users from far and wide. While visitors are always welcome, "if you build it they will come..." and along with that comes the overwhelming of already stretched public safety resources. Include the city's Risk Manager in the conversation! Speaking of public safety resources, a new fire station as well as LASD substation would be an important addition. Parking for the LASD ATVs should be provided so they don't have to be trailered from Lomita Station. And of course, a helipad. Space for public meeting rooms for the City Council as well as for other gatherings/lectures/classes would be welcome.
