ORDINANCE NO. 171
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF RANCHO PALOS
VERDES AMENDING THE RESIDENTIAL FIRE-
WARNING SYSTEMS PROVISIONS OF THE BUILDING
CODE AND AMENDING THE RANCHO PALOS VERDES
MUNICIPAL CODE
II/ THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RANCHO PALOS
VERDES DOES ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Chapter 15.04 of Title 15 of the
Rancho Palos Verdes Municipal Code is amended by adding
Section 15.04.120 to read:
15.04.120. Notwithstanding the provisions of
Section 15.04.010, the Building Code is amended by amending
Section 1210(a) to read:
Sec. 1210(a) Fire-Warning Systems.
Every dwelling unit and every guest room in a
hotel or lodging house used for sleeping purposes shall
be provided with smoke detectors conforming to U.B.C.
Standard No. 43-6. In dwelling units, detectors shall
be mounted on the ceiling or wall at a point centrally
located in the corridor or area giving access to rooms
used for sleeping purposes. One must be within 121/2
feet of the door to each such room. In an efficiency
dwelling unit, hotel sleeping room and in hotel suites,
the detector shall be centrally located on the ceiling
of the main room or hotel sleeping room. Where sleeping
rooms are on an upper level within the unit a detector
shall be placed at the center of the ceiling directly
above the stairway, but there must be a detector within
1215 feet of the door to each room used for sleeping
purposes on that level. One additional detector shall
be placed adjacent to the stairway on the ceiling of
each level below the level on which the sleeping rooms
are located. All detectors shall be located in accor-
dance with approved manufacturer's instructions. All
required detectors shall be interconnected so that
actuation of any one detector will sound a simultaneous
alarm of all of the detectors located within the same
dwelling unit or guest room. Where a smoke detector is
located wtihin 121/2 feet of an appliance which produces
11/ products of combustion, except a forced air furnace, it
shall be a photoelectric type.
When alterations, repairs or additions requiring a
permit and having a valuation in excess of $1,000
occur, or when one or more sleeping rooms are added or
created in existing Group R, Division 3 Occupancies,
the entire building shall be provided with smoke
detectors located as required for new Group R, Division
3 Occupancies.

In new construction, required smoke detectors
shall receive their primary power from the building
wiring when such wiring is served from a commercial
source. Wiring shall be permament and without a
disconnecting switch other than those required for
overcurrent protection. Smoke detectors may be battery
operated when installed in existing buildings, or in
buildings without commercial power, or in buildings
which undergo alterations, repairs or additions regulated
by the second paragraph of this section. Battery
operated smoke detectors allowed by this section need
not be interconnected.
