AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF RANCHO PALOS
VERDES MAKING REVISIONS TO THE TEXT OF THE
BUILDING CODE TO UPGRADE THE REQUIREMENTS
FOR FIRE-RETARDANT ROOF COVERINGS IN
DESIGNATED AREAS OF THE CITY
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RANCHO PALOS VERDES DOES ORDAIN
AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1: Chapter 15.04.100 of the Rancho Palos Verdes Municipal
Code is hereby amended to read:
15.04.100 Fire Retardant Roofing.
A. All construction of new structures requires a fire retardant
roof covering as allowed in Section 3203(e) of the Building
Code. In areas designated as a fire hazard zone on the "fire
hazard map" on file in the offices of the Department of Environ-
mental Services, and the offices of the Building Department of the
City, all additions and re-roofs that exceed twenty-five percent
of the total roof area within one year require a fire retardant
roof covering as allowed in Section 3203(e) of the Building
Code.
B. Not withstanding the provisions of Section 15.04.010, Section 1704
of the Building Code is amended to read:
Roof coverings shall be fire retardant. Exception: In areas
outside the fire hazard area as designated on the fire hazard map,
in Section 15.04.100A of the Rancho Palos Verdes Municipal Code,
additions and re-roofs may be as specified in Section 3203 (f) of
the Building Code.
Skylights shall be constructed as required in Chapter 34.
Penthouses shall be constructed as required in Chapter 36.
For use of plastics in roofs see Chapter 52.
For attics: Access, Draft Stops and Ventilation, see Section 3205.
For Roof Drainage, see Section. 3207.
C. Not withstanding the provisions of Section 15.04.010, Section
3203(f) of the Building Code is amended by amending subparagraphs
5 and 6 thereof to read:
5. Wood shingles treated to meet Class "C" rating.
6. Wood shakes treated to meet Class "C" rating.
